In 2013, Jaikishan Patel and Snehal Patil, students from IDC, IIT-Bombay designed and released the first map. The Locals of Mumbai project initiated as MRM (Mumbai Rail Map) project, has experienced significant growth owing to the dedication of a motivated team and the valuable input from the people of Mumbai. To ensure the effectiveness of the map, user testing was conducted at Dadar Central and Mumbai CST stations to identify and address any comprehension difficulties.

Version 5 of the Mumbai Rail map underwent rigorous testing at Dadar and CST Railway stations, with the consent of Central Railways and the support of the Railway Board, MHRD and IIT Bombay. The insights gathered from commuter feedback were instrumental in the development of Version 6 of the print map in 5 languages; Marathi, Hindi, Gujarati, Urdu and English. For further information, the documentation is available on Prof. Mandar Rane's website, providing comprehensive details about the project's evolution and improvements.
